Sumas River project
Overview
Crossing length: 300m
Pipe material: NPS 42 casing, NPS 24 Product Pipe
Client: Trans Mountain
Location: Sumas River, east of Abbotsford, BC.
OVERVIEW
Direct Pipe® Installation of 311m of OD1219mm steel casing. The OD609mm product pipe was inserted into the casing and the casing was removed. MTBM used: AVN 1000, mixed cutting face
CHALLENGES
Western Canadian Record setting hot temperatures over 50 degrees Celsius resultingly, safety was critical when working in hot conditions, especially during confined space entry into the pipe. Geotechnical conditions at launch shaft were in zero blow count silts and sands. Thrust anchor & foundation was engineered with steel piling to withstand thrust forces.
ACTION
Bothar was able to insert the 311 meter long coated product pipe with telemetry conduits installed on the pipe exterior into the tunneled casing that was later removed from the tunnel. Prime Contractor duties included pipe support, weld, test, coat, traffic consideration, settlement monitoring, muck disposal, QHSE, Engineering design, dewatering, etc.
RESULTS
Bothar team successfully installed 320 meters of 42″ casing using the Direct Pipe installation method.
